Salvage
Fall 2025
Fundamentally, Salvage is an act of preservation, an effort to save something that could otherwise vanish, be it a memory, an object, or a piece of oneself. For this issue, we encourage people to think about Salvage as transformation rather than restoration to a previous state: how repaired surfaces show care, how recovered histories change once brought into the present, and what happens when we go back to what was previously disregarded. Through the poetry of restoration, the weight of cultural and personal archives, the rediscovery of the familiar, and the power of nature reclaiming space, artists addressed this issue in an array of submissions. Others leaned toward abstraction, fragmentation, and distortion, using Salvage as a technique and a metaphor for the narratives we create from what’s left. This issue is guided by a question: What do we decide to save, and how does saving change the thing itself? These pieces suggest that Salvage is more about seeing something transformed and still relevant than it is about returning something to its original state.
